Chair’s Message

Welcome to the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology

Welcome to the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. It is a privilege to lead the department as we move forward with medical technology in the 21st century including the recent implementation of a new university-wide electronic medical records system that allows for seamless communication between medical specialties.

The department has been providing excellence in women’s healthcare to patients across the state and around the world for over half a century. We offer a broad range of clinical services in general obstetrics and gynecology as well as specialized services in maternal-fetal medicine and fetal surgery, reproductive endocrinology, gynecologic oncology, and urogynecology.

Our physicians are recruited from a diverse global community and they are recognized nationally and internationally for their expertise and cutting-edge clinical and research capabilities. Our department has participated in breakthrough research such as studies leading to the reduction of perinatal transmission of HIV from mother to child during pregnancy. Today, our physicians are studying ways to repair life-threatening conditions in babies while they are still in the womb and exploring new treatments for gynecologic cancers.

Our residency program is one of the largest in the country and one of the few to now offer comprehensive robotics training as part of the curriculum. We interview the most competitive applicants from world renowned medical schools and accept nine new residents annually for a total of thirty six.

We are affiliated with some of the most prestigious in-patient facilities in the state of Florida including Jackson Memorial Hospital, University of Miami Hospital and Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center.

I invite you to explore our website for additional information about our services, research, medical education programs, and our physicians.

Warm Regards,

Ira Karmin, M.D.
