GYO Fellow Spotlight with Dr. Hinshaw
What attracted you to gynecologic oncology?
I have always been very passionate about women’s health and cancer care. Being a gynecologic oncologist gives me the unique opportunity to foster a lifelong relationship and care for women with cancer by offering them treatment, support and comfort care throughout the course of their illness and beyond.
What attracted you to the University of Miami for fellowship training?
The UM fellowship program offers the opportunity to learn about the full spectrum of gynecologic cancer care from surgery and chemotherapy to palliative care and counseling. The faculty are committed to mentoring us and I am able to gain exposure to all surgical modalities including open, robotics and laparoscopic surgery. All our core hospitals are located within walking distance of each other which minimizes the need to travel and we are able to practice in different hospital settings (private and public) which will prepare me to function in any post training environment after my training.
What makes UM’s Gynecologic Oncology Fellowship unique?
UM’s fellowship gives one the opportunity to work with a diverse, multi-cultural population. This provides unique research opportunities to study specific sub populations with gynecologic cancers.
What is living in Miami, FL like for you?
Miami is a vibrant city with warm weather and numerous activities and events all year round. There is always something to do or see, during my time away from work to keep my life in balance as a gynecologic oncology fellow.
